Gabriel Zakuani: Peterborough United defender would like extended Posh stay

Gabriel Zakuani has made 26 appearances for Peterborough this season

Peterborough United defender Gabriel Zakuani says he wants to stay at the League One club but knows Sunday versus Blackpool "could be his last game".

The 29-year-old is in his second spell at Posh but is out of contract.

"This is home to me so it would be a shame because my kids are growing up as Peterborough fans," said Zakuani.

"I'm not even their favourite player, that tells you how big Peterborough United is at home. They ask if they can stay with Jon Taylor instead of me."

The DR Congo international added to BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "It's not just about me, it's about my family as well. We'd have to uproot so it's a lot to think about."

Zakuani has spent seven years at Posh, but could make his final appearance for the club at home against relegation-threatened Blackpool this weekend.

Posh host the Tangerines under the caretaker charge of Grant McCann, stepping up from assistant after the sacking of Graham Westley.

Zakuani played with McCann at the Cambridgeshire club, and the Northern Irishman was also assistant to Westley's predecessor Dave Robertson.

"If he felt he was ready he's definitely the right man," said Zakuani of McCann's chances of being full-time manager. "I don't think there's anyone that knows the club better than him coaching-wise.

"He's been there through two different managers, he's learnt a lot, the good and the bad and when he adds his own thing to it, it could be the perfect fit.

"He comes across as softly spoken but he's got a hairdryer as well. He's definitely someone you'd respect and got everything to be a top manager.

"The question is whether he feels he's ready or not but I don't doubt he is."
