Steve Davis is hoping to bring Crewe back into League One at the first attempt in 2016-17

Manager Steve Davis says relegated Crewe Alexandra need leaders "on and off the pitch" for their attempt to get back into League One next season.

The Alex will play in League Two next term after a four-year absence and Davis knows the sort of recruits he needs to bolster his young squad.

"Leaders set the right examples," Davis, 50, told BBC Radio Stoke.

"They have experience of playing at different levels that help the young players - especially when it's tough."

Davis, who has been given the backing by the Alex board to carry on next season, is still hoping to tie up a deal for veteran striker Ryan Lowe and says the 37-year-old fits the bill for what he wants at Gresty Road in 2016-17.

"He's still in our thoughts," Davis said. "They're are a number of players like him we'd like. They're not easy to get but if we can it'll be a real help.

"They're the types we're looking for - players that are just as important off the pitch as on it.

"They're great to have around and are positive in everything they do."

Bakayogo 'deserves' new deal

Davis also confirmed the club are waiting to finalise a fresh contract with former Millwall, Tranmere and Leicester defender Zoumana Bakayogo.

The 29-year-old initially signed non-contract terms until the end of the season in January after two years out of the game following a knee injury.

"It's down to him and his representatives now," Davis said.

"We hope we get him, we've done all we can - he's a great character.

"He's earned very little money this year so deserves more from us now he's done well."

Bottom-of-the-table Crewe complete their season with a trip to relegation-threatened Fleetwood knowing a win could also send their hosts down.
