The draw extended Derry's unbeaten league run to nine games

Derry City missed the opportunity to move into second place in the League of Ireland Premier Division table as they were held at home by Galway United.

In truth, Galway probably deserved their point with Derry keeper Gerard Doherty having to make a couple of tremendous saves.

Derry also created a number of chances and striker Rory Patterson almost won it late on as he hit the woodwork.

The win extends Derry's unbeaten run in the league to nine games.

However, the failure to clinch a win means Derry remain third in the table with Cork still ahead of them on goal difference.

The Leesiders have four games in hand on Derry while champions Dundalk are now four points clear at the top after beating Bohemians 2-1 in Dublin on Friday night.

Derry bossed possession early on in Friday's game but Galway had the first decent chance in the 20th minute as Doherty had to react smartly to deny Vinny Faherty after Patrick McClean lost possession.

Ronan Curtis then went close for Derry as he tested Galway keeper Conor Wynn but Enda Curran was inches away from giving the visitors the lead from a free-kick which beat Doherty before the Candystripes ended the half by producing pressure which saw Niclas Vemmelund and Curtis having efforts blocked.

Derry keeper Doherty made another great save to deny Curran after the resumption although the home side created the bulk of the chances in the remainder of the contest.

After Patterson just failed to get a touch to a superb Dean Jarvis cross, Galway keeper Wynn brilliantly denied Lukas Schubert before Patterson flicked a Ben Doherty shot onto the woodwork in the 73rd minute.
