Alan Archibald: Shrewsbury Town make approach for Partick Thistle manager

Partick Thistle manager Alan Archibald won promotion in his first season in charge of the Jags

Shrewsbury are keen to recruit Alan Archibald from Scottish Premiership side Partick Thistle as their new boss.

BBC Radio Shropshire reports that 38-year-old Archibald has been approached, but the two clubs are still in talks over a compensation package.

Archibald signed a new long-term deal in May, tying him to Partick for a further three seasons until 2019.

Shrewsbury have been without a manager since Micky Mellon left to take over at Tranmere.

Archibald is the longest-serving Scottish Premiership manager, having been in charge since January 2013.

He spent 13 years as a defender in two spells with Partick, either side of four seasons at Dundee United.

He then took over at Firhill following Jackie McNamara's departure, guiding the Jags to promotion to the SPL in his first season.

He has since kept them up three seasons running, finishing 10th, eighth and ninth, although they currently stand second bottom in 11th after eight matches.

Shrewsbury chief executive Brian Caldwell, a fellow Scot, has said that he hopes to name a new boss from his four-man shortlist before Saturday's visit of Northampton Town to the Greenhous Meadow.

Town have not won now in nine games since 3 September - and have lost their last four on the spin, three of them in the league, going bottom with Tuesday's 3-0 home defeat by Sheffield United.
