Yeovil Town Ladies: WSL 1 dream comes true for club that 'used to play in a park'

Yeovil Town Ladies will face teams including Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City in 2017

Yeovil Town Ladies forward Annie Heatherson says promotion to the top flight is a dream for a club that was "playing in a park" four years ago.

The Lady Glovers clinched promotion to Women's Super League One for the first time with Sunday's win at London Bees.

"This is a massive dream for everyone," Heatherson told BBC Sport.

"Lots of players in our team haven't played in WSL 1 before but they're about to play against World Cup bronze-medallists from the England team."

The former Charlton and Chelsea Ladies player continued: "I remember playing against Yeovil four years ago, playing for Brislington Ladies.

"That was just a local league, kicking a ball around in a park - and I mean a park.

"Now they're playing at Huish Park and have been promoted to WSL 1 - it just shows you what four years can do to a club."

Yeovil played in the fourth tier in 2011-12 and then finished third in the 2012-13 Women's Premier League Southern Division, before joining WSL 2 for the summer of 2014.

They finished fifth in WSL 2 in 2014, fourth in 2015 and are now top of the table with one match remaining this term.

Chairman Stephen Allinson told BBC Somerset: "What a journey. It's incredible.

"We have to thank and remember a lot of girls who kicked in front of two men, women and a dog, watching us in Somerton and Alverton. Next year we will play Man City."

Captain Ellie Curson added: "It's history for the whole club. I don't think the staff get as much credit as they should do.

"Our general manager Trevor Jenkins is absolutely unbelievable, the amount of time he puts into this club."

Bristol City Women, who are second on goal-difference behind Yeovil, sealed their promotion straight back to WSL 1 with Saturday's dramatic win at Everton.

Yeovil's goal-difference is six better than Bristol's and they will win the title in their final match of the season on 6 November with victory over Sheffield FC, unless Bristol overturn that deficit in beating Oxford United.
