Brendan Rodgers says Celtic took "another step forward" with their performance in Germany

Brendan Rodgers felt Celtic were the "best team" and should should have beaten Borussia Monchengladbach.

Moussa Dembele secured a 1-1 draw by scoring from the penalty spot after Lars Stindl had volleyed Gladbach ahead in the Champions League Group C tie.

The result kept Celtic's hopes of progression to the knockout stage alive, though they would need to beat both Barcelona and Manchester City.

"It's another step forward in a very short period of time," said Rodgers.

"We're trying to create a team that can come to Europe - both at home and away - that can be a real threat but play with a composure and a bravery on the ball."

Celtic, who are bottom of the group with two points, face Barcelona in Glasgow on 23 November before visiting Manchester City on 6 December.

Though their Champions League fate is all but sealed, Dembele's penalty ensures they can still overtake Gladbach to secure a Europa League place.

"It keeps us in there fighting," said Rodgers.

"I thought we should've won the game. I thought we were the best team. I'm really proud of the players."

Gladbach, who won 2-0 in Glasgow last month, took the lead at Borussia-Park through Stindl's volley.

Celtic's Scott Sinclair had earlier hit a post, while Andre Hahn did similar for the hosts in the second half.

The Scottish champions levelled when Dembele netted after he was fouled in the box by defender Julian Korb who was sent off.

Celtic substitute Callum McGregor went through on goal late on, but shot wide as Sinclair waited in the middle for a pass.

"He's either got to score or he's got to square it," Rodgers said. "That was probably the moment we felt we could win it."

The former Liverpool manager was particularly impressed with Dembele, saying the 20-year-old was "immense".

"His presence and quality in the game and strength really disturbed their back four," said Rodgers.

"In order for us to improve and be better, we need to play with personality, and the personality we showed in the game was outstanding.

"I want my teams to come and have the confidence and belief to dominate, to create chances and play with aggression."
