Rob Maclean: Five things we learned at the weekend
- Published
BBC Scotland football commentator Rob Maclean continues his regular review of the weekend football action.
Magical McGinn
That was some spectacular Friday night farewell if Niall McGinn is ready to end his days with the Dons.
And interest in the Northern Ireland international, who is out of contract at the end of the season, will only have been heightened by his virtuoso performance in the dismantling of Dundee at Pittodrie.
Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes has made it clear he wants McGinn to complete his five years at the club, then extend his stay in the north-east.
The player may already have made up his mind that he wants to cash in on what might be his last chance to make a major move.
But Aberdeen will hope the magical McGinn remains their player for, at least, the rest of the campaign. Only an offer they can't refuse in the next day or two would change that.
Catch him while you can
It's probably only Kieran Tierney's three-month injury absence this season which has kept him at Celtic.
He's one of the best young footballers produced in Scotland for a long time and I feel sure if he hadn't missed the last 10 weeks of 2016 he'd be a wanted man in this transfer window.
The teenage Tierney returned to the Celtic team for Scottish Cup weekend and hit the ground running. In Sunday's record-breaking home win against Hearts, he laid on two of the goals and barely put a foot wrong.
Kieran won't turn 20 until the summer and, although he's going to keep on improving, it's hard to find too many weaknesses in his game even now.
Enjoy watching him at close-quarters while you can. He won't be gracing our game for a whole lot longer.
Accies need a scorer...other than Crawford
Rarely has Hamilton's over-reliance on the goals of Ali Crawford been better demonstrated than in Perth on Saturday.
Yes, the little midfielder should have scored when he was racing in on goal with only St Johnstone keeper Zander Clark to beat.
And yes, it was a game-changer with Saints opening the scoring a couple of minutes later en route to a comfortable 3-0 win.
But there's too much onus at Accies on Crawford to continually find the net. Neither Alex D'Acol nor Rakish Bingham look like prolific scorers and I'd be tempted to give young Eamonn Brophy a go up front.
Something needs to change for Hamilton who can't boast a Premiership win in three months.
Allergic to defeat
Hibs are toughing it out in the style of their manager to become an increasingly strong bet for automatic promotion to the Premiership.
I haven't come across too many football people who hate losing more than Neil Lennon and it seems as if the gaffer's allergy to defeat is getting through to his players.
The last seven weeks, since Hibs lost to their apparent title rivals Dundee United at Tannadice, could prove to be decisive when it comes to the crunch.
Saturday's slender 1-0 win in Dumfries was their fourth straight Championship victory since Hogmanay and they're seven league games unbeaten.
United, in contrast, are five matches without a win, they've slipped eight points behind Hibs and could find that gap too big to close.
The fastest man in Ayrshire
And another thing we found out this weekend was that Kris Bolt, I mean Boyd, could be a speedy solution to Kilmarnock's top-flight relegation worries.
Who knew that the 33-year-old striker could sprint a full 50 yards in 10.4 seconds? Especially taking into account the added wind resistance of his blossoming bushy beard.
And Kris ended that rapier-like run, straight from kick-off, with the goal which pointed Killie towards a priceless 3-2 home win against Ross County.
It was the fastest strike in the SPL/Premiership era and adds to all the other Scottish football records Boydy The Bullet's broken.
