Solihull v Chester: Opening game of season postponed because of safety concerns

Solihull Moors' opening match of the National League season against Chester on Saturday has been postponed because of safety concerns.

The National League issued a statement saying: "The Solihull Safety Advisory Group has clarified that spectators cannot be admitted to the ground until required safety systems are in place.

"Arrangements are in hand to urgently deal with this matter."

Their Damson Park home opened in 1999 and has an official capacity of 3,050.

Solihull's average home league last season was 1,013, with a campaign high of 1,995 for the visit of Tranmere Rovers.

Manager Liam McDonald said: "Like everybody involved with both Solihull Moors and Chester, I am bitterly disappointed to have our season opener cancelled and share the frustration of all supporters.

"The club were only made aware of this issue by Solihull Council at 7:30pm last night before the postponement was enforced on us earlier today and we've been asked by the National League not to elaborate on the statement that has been issued.

"After an impressive pre-season, we were all hoping to carry that positive momentum into the new campaign and we all hope this issue will be resolved in the very near future."

Chester said on their website that they were "aware of the impact it will have on the Blues fans who were looking forward to the start of the season".
