Southend United 2-2 Northampton Town

  • Published

Two goals in the space of three second-half minutes saw Southend United secure a draw with 10-man Northampton Town at Roots Hall.

The Cobblers led 2-0 at the break but strikes from Jason Demetriou and Anthony Wordsworth saw Phil Brown's side fight back to pick up a share of the spoils.

Northampton opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Leon Barnett's low shot from Yaser Kasim's right-wing corner was deflected into his own net by Nile Ranger.

The Cobblers doubled their advantage when Matt Crooks curled a low 20-yard shot into the bottom right-hand corner.

However, Southend stepped things up at the start of the second half with Demetriou firing home a deflected 20-yard shot.

And, two minutes later, Wordsworth, who was making his first appearance since suffering a hamstring injury in April, burst into the box to score.

But the Cobblers dug in to pick up a point despite Crooks being shown a second yellow card in stoppage time.
