Lorenzo Insigne had a number of chances but failed to make the breakthrough

Napoli and Inter Milan remain unbeaten in Serie A this season after the meeting between Serie A's top two teams ended in stalemate.

Napoli, who dropped points for the first time this campaign, were the better side but could not find a way past Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.

The pick of the Slovenian's display was a superb double save to deny Jose Callejon and Dries Mertens.

Napoli remain top of Serie A, two points ahead of Saturday's opponent.

Pep Guardiola praised Maurizio Sarri's side for their performance in defeat at Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday, and they impressed again domestically on Saturday.

They came up against a keeper in top form in Handanovic and after failing to make the breakthrough, their midweek exertions took their toll in the final quarter.

Adding to his double save, Handanovic also palmed away Lorenzo Insigne's close-range header, a powerful drive from substitute Piotr Zielinski and Mertens' flicked effort in the final minute.

Inter have not offered the same scintillating attacking play as Napoli during their own impressive start to this season, but what they have demonstrated is similar rigidity at the back.

Luciano Spalletti's side could have nicked a win themselves had Raul Albiol not been well-placed to head a Matias Vecino chip off his own goalline.

Elsewhere, Sampdoria are up to fifth in the table after putting five unanswered goals past Crotone.

Gian Marco Ferrari, Fabio Quagliarella and Gianluca Caprari struck in the first half, with Karol Linetty and Dawid Kownacki adding further goals in the second.
