Colchester United 0-1 Oxford City

Matt Paterson's second-half header gave National League South side Oxford City a shock FA Cup first round victory at Colchester United.

Paterson's winner came right at the start of the second half as he headed in David Pearce's cross.

City are into round two for only the second time in their history.

Tom Eastman struck the crossbar for the hosts in the first half while Paterson hit the woodwork with a free-kick at the other end.

Colchester, who once produced a giant-killing themselves by knocking out the then mighty Leeds United in the fifth round in 1971, are 56 places above City in the football pyramid.

They had chances to level matters with Kyel Reid's deflected free-kick from the edge of the area flashing inches wide and keeper Jack Stevens denying substitute Craig Slater.

Lewis Kinsella also went close but City held on.

Colchester United manager John McGreal told BBC Essex:

"We've picked a team that won last week against Crewe. Players that were looking to try and score goals.

"We've just been looking at some of the decisions in and around their attacking third, slashing at things, snatching at things.

"Take nothing away from Oxford, they were excellent on the day and deserved to go through."

Oxford City boss Mark Jones told BBC Radio Oxford:

"Sometimes you just can't make up the script. Tremendous credit goes to the players today for the way they stuck at it. I'm delighted for them.

"We have struggled a bit so far this season but today is just a fantastic day for the club.

"It's only the second time the club have ever reached the second round so these players can go down in the history of the club."
