Remi Allen put Reading into a first-half lead, the first league goal Chelsea have conceded this campaign, from Fara Williams' clever backheel.
Karen Carney levelled for Chelsea after the break from a free-kick before Eniola Aluko swept them in front.
But Eriksson's header into her own net ensured the game ended all square.
Manchester City's 4-0 win over Bristol City later on Sunday saw them overtake Chelsea at the top of the table.
A point was no more than Reading deserved as they created numerous chances against a below-par Blues side.
Emma Hayes' Chelsea had been in unstoppable league form heading into the match at Adams Park, having won their opening four matches and scoring 19 goals.
But they fell behind following some sloppy defending which allowed England midfielder Williams to find Allen, who bundled in from close range.
The game turned around after the break with two goals of the highest quality from the visitors.
Carney, instrumental for Chelsea throughout, curled a superb set-piece into the corner and substitute Aluko finished first time from Fran Kirby's pull back.
However, Eriksson's error means Chelsea are now two points behind Manchester City in second.
