Joe Bryan cracked home Bristol City's opening goal against United

Scotland's next manager has been urged to call up Bristol City duo Joe Bryan and Jamie Paterson by the English Championship club's boss Lee Johnson.

Left-back Bryan, 24, and striker Paterson, 26, both played key roles in City's stunning Carabao Cup victory over Manchester United on Wednesday.

Both are Scottish qualified, likely targets for Premier League clubs and "international players", Johnson says.

"I spoke to Gordon Strachan about this," Johnson told BBC Sportsound.

"Joe Bryan can play for Scotland or England. England are looking at him as well on a regular basis.

"I am very surprised he hasn't been pulled into a squad at least already. He can play in a number of positions and he is a top, top player.

"We will probably have to fend off bids from Premier League clubs for him in January, or certainly in the summer.

"In my opinion he is definitely an international player."

Bristol-born Bryan - a product of City's youth academy who can also play left midfield or wing-back - opened the scoring against United with a powerful drive into the top corner.

He was selected by Scotland's Under-21s in October 2012, but could not play because of a concussion sustained playing for City.

Jamie Paterson has also played for Walsall, Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield

Coventry-born Paterson, 26, has declared a preference to play for Scotland, as he qualifies through his parents.

"He is another who should at least be given a go in the friendlies," added Johnson, who played for Hearts and Kilmarnock during his own career.

"I honestly believe that athletically and technically, they are right up there with the players Scotland have got."

Johnson, whose City side face are sitting third in the Championship and face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, believes there is a "stubbornness" in international managers "who don't want to pick players who are at unfashionable clubs".

"All of a sudden you will see Joe and Jamie got to Premier League clubs and they will be in the next squad," Johnson added.

"That is madness. Get them in and have a look. It raises the profile of the player, and also they will see that they are good enough."
