A goal from substitute Rory Patterson helped Derry City beat derby rivals Finn Harps 2-1 in the second round of the EA Sports Cup at Ballybofey.

Ciaran Coll rifled a shot in off a post to give the hosts an 11th-minute lead in the Easter Monday tie.

Aaron McEneff levelled with a 29th-minute penalty, his fourth goal in four games for the Candystripes.

Patterson had only been on the pitch for a few minutes when he netted the winner after 63 minutes.

Derry, who lie fifth in the Premier Division, progress to the quarter-finals of the competition thanks to the victory over their First Division opponents.

For Kenny Shiels' side, it was their second of eight matches in just over a month, with their next fixture a league encounter away to Sligo Rovers on Saturday night.

Derry have won the League Cup competition a record 10 times, their last success coming in 2011 when they beat Cork City 1-0 in the final.
