Middlesbrough have signed Northern Ireland midfielder Paddy McNair from League One side Sunderland in a deal that could rise to more than £5m.

The 23-year-old has agreed a four-year contract with Boro.

Former Manchester United trainee McNair scored seven goals in 28 appearances during two years with the Black Cats, who were relegated to the third tier last season.

Premier League Brighton had two bids for McNair turned down this summer.
