Everton had been keen to sign Celtic's Kieran Tierney.

Everton have decided against pursuing their interest in the Celtic defender Kieran Tierney.

The 21-year-old defender was one of the players Everton had identified as new manager Marco Silva seeks to reshape his squad.

Now the Premier League club are to turn their attention elsewhere in the search for a long-term replacement for Leighton Baines.

Tierney is under contract with the Scottish champions until 2023.

It was thought Everton had been prepared to offer in the region of £25m for the Scotland international, who was linked with Atletico Madrid in April.

Celtic, though, gave no indication they were willing to let the player go, and Tierney himself is in no hurry to leave.

Their first competitive match against Alashkert in the Champions League first qualifying round takes place on Tuesday, with the return leg in Glasgow seven days later.

Tierney, who played at left wing-back in Sunday's 7-0 friendly win at Shamrock Rovers, has made 130 Celtic appearances, scoring seven times, and has been capped by Scotland on nine occasions.

He has captained both club and country and has won three Premiership titles and three domestic cups with Celtic.
