Rangers: Steven Gerrard targets Sadiq Umar & pledges to 'do more transfer business'

Steven Gerrard aims to make more signings in the coming weeks as he continues to shape his Rangers squad.

The new Gers boss has already brought in seven players since taking over in June but is keen to further bolster his options for the new season.

Gerrard has been linked with a move for Roma striker Sadiq Umar and hinted a deal could be done in the near future.

"He [Umar] is still a Roma player but it has been well documented that I am a fan," Gerrard said.

"But it's just a case of watch this space."

Nigerian international Umar, 21, has been with Roma since 2015, spending time on loan with Italian counterparts Bologna and Torino.

He played most recently for NAC Breda in the Dutch top flight during a six-month loan stint, where he scored five goals in 12 appearances.

Rangers continued their preparations for next week's Europa League first-leg qualifier against Macedonian side Shkupi with a 6-0 friendly thrashing of Bury on Friday.

"It is difficult to say whether it will be done before the first leg, but we will be doing more business," Gerrard added.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Wes Foderingham faces a fight to retain his place in the starting line-up.

The return of Scotland veteran Allan McGregor, the continued development of Robby McCrorie and presence of Jak Alnwick in the squad mean Rangers are well-stocked with stoppers, and Foderingham could move on.

"I don't have a number one or number two or three, I have three excellent goalkeepers with decent experience," Gerrard said.

"I have three fantastic goalkeepers but somewhere down the line one of them is not going to be happy, and there is nothing I can do about that.

"At some point one of them won't be around because three top goalies don't go and I will have to make a difficult decision."

Jamie Murphy, Alfredo Morelos and Zak Rudden got the other goals as Gerrard made his Ibrox bow.

"We're ready for the challenge," he said of the first leg.

"The expectation and pressure will be completely different to today [Friday].

"After last year, of course there will be more pressure and more eyes on us, but I'm confident come kick-off that they will be ready to go."

Twelve months ago, Rangers began their campaign with an embarrassing Europa League exit to Progres Niederkorn of Luxembourg.

However, the 41,015 supporters who turned up to watch a one-sided game against English League Two opposition will hope for a better season in Gerrard's first in charge.

Connor Goldson and Jon Flanagan were the other new faces making their Ibrox debuts, while Murphy has had his loan from Brighton turned into a permanent move and McGregor was back in goals after leaving the club in 2012.

Midfielder Ryan Jack came off the bench to make his first appearance since December when he picked up a knee injury.

Glenn Middleton was also introduced as a second-half replacement and the teenage winger caught the eye with two assists and several threatening surges.
