Conor Washington set up both goals against former club Peterborough as two strikes in the opening six minutes gave Steve McClaren a first win as QPR boss.

Luke Freeman side-footed QPR ahead on three minutes after Posh keeper Aaron Chapman parried Washington's cross.

Northern Ireland striker Washington then fed Pawel Wszolek to prod past Chapman just three minutes later.

Peterborough improved after the break but Siriki Dembele was denied by the legs of Rangers keeper Joe Lumley.

It has been a difficult week for QPR, with defeats - albeit narrow ones - in both their opening two Championship games under McClaren compounded by off-field issues.

Chairman Tony Fernandes has hinted his time at Rangers is nearing its end, while Hoops chief executive Lee Hoos told BBC Sport the club "needs to leave" Loftus Road.

But this win will have lifted some of the gloom as Posh never looked like joining Port Vale, Rochdale, Swindon, Burton and Carlisle in the list of lower-league teams to dump the Hoops out of the EFL Cup in recent years.
