Steven Gerrard's Rangers secured their second Premiership win of the season and piled further pressure on a Dundee side who had Kenny Miller sent off.

Lassana Coulibaly, Ryan Kent, James Tavernier and Glenn Middleton added to the bottom side's burgeoning goals-against column.

But for goalkeeper Elliot Parish, the margin would have been more severe.

And former Rangers player Miller, who captained Dundee, was dismissed late on for a challenge on Borna Barisic.

The veteran forward will now miss Dundee's next attempt to get their first points of the season against Hibernian next week.

Rangers, meanwhile, go into Thursday's Europa League group opener away to Villarreal having moved to within two points of second-placed Celtic.

Ruthless Rangers

Dundee had almost as many efforts in the first half as their hosts but, crucially, hit the target with none.

Coulibaly - back after a month out - beat Alfredo Morelos to the rebound after Barisic's effort had been blocked and the midfielder looked very much in the mood to add to his personal tally in the first half.

He sent an overhead kick over and Kent, who drove home after exchanging passes with Morelos and Scott Arfield, also came close to scoring again as Parish was called into action once more.

Darren O'Dea's foul on Morelos capped a dreadful first half for the visitors with Tavernier converting the spot-kick deep into stoppage time.

Coulibaly's replacement Middleton followed Kent in notching a first Rangers goal after pouncing on Genseric Kusunga's slip in the box.

And it could have been even worse for the visitors as Kyle Lafferty smashed the ball against the crossbar after having come on for Kent.

The picture for Neil McCann's Dundee was grim before kick-off after four defeats in four league games and the one saving grace of another loss is that second-bottom Hamilton Academical are still only three points ahead after losing at Livingston.

The Dark Blues visit Accies in two weeks' time but face a tricky home match against Hibs in the interim.

McCann made five changes to his starting line-up, including replacing Jack Hamilton with Parish.

But despite the goalkeeper's best efforts, it proved to be a long day in Glasgow for the visitors.

Miller's third Ibrox spell ended in the summer in acrimonious circumstances. The player had been fined and suspended following a dressing room row with former manager Graeme Murty in April and he did not feature again for the club. However, the striker's appeal against the way in which Rangers took disciplinary action was upheld earlier this month.

Gerrard had encouraged, external Rangers fans to show their appreciation of the 38-year-old but the striker's match would be cut short when he saw red for his tackle on Barisic.
