Bristol City 1-0 Huddersfield in FA Cup third round

Huddersfield's defeat by Championship side Bristol City in the FA Cup third round is "very, very difficult to take", said manager David Wagner.

Huddersfield, who are bottom of the Premier League, have now lost nine games in a row and Wagner said the loss "doesn't help" their survival bid.

Josh Brownhill beat Ben Hamer at his near post following a good solo run for the only goal at Ashton Gate.

"We missed getting the winning feeling back," Wagner said.

"Nothing is better than the winning feeling.

"We were not good enough to win this game. It was a tight and even game but I expected more. The dressing room is quiet.

"We were not good enough. We haven't had a clean sheet in nine games."

Huddersfield's best chance came in the 65th minute when Steve Mounie lobbed goalkeeper Niki Maenpaa and the ball was cleared by Bailey Wright.

Bristol City's Callum O'Dowda headed Jack Hunt's cross against the bar with the game goalless.

Huddersfield's only shot in the first half came from Laurent Depoitre, who diverted Erik Durm's cross over.

They improved in the second half but Chris Lowe and Alex Pritchard also missed the target with shots from inside the area.

Brownhill almost added a second late on when his powerful shot from the right side of the box was saved by Hamer.

Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson said: "I'm very proud of the team.

"We put in a controlled performance and were composed. Huddersfield are a great side on the ball.

"We had the lion's share of possession - not a mean feat against a Premier League team."

Huddersfield's recent form is such that defeat by lower-league opposition does not feel like a surprise.

They have won only twice in 21 league games this season and are eight points from safety.

Meanwhile, Bristol City, who beat Premier League Watford, Stoke, Crystal Palace and Manchester United en route to the League Cup semi-finals last season, are unbeaten in eight Championship matches this term.

Huddersfield were abject in the first half and it took the introduction of Pritchard and Mounie at half-time for them to show a serious threat going forward.

Bristol City's goal came following Huddersfield's best spell of the match after Lowe, Mounie and Pritchard went close.

Although Brownhill showed good skill in the penalty area, Hamer should have saved his shot.

"We had chances but didn't work the keeper," Wagner said.

"It looked like one goal would decide the game. You saw what happens when you hit the target. We were in better positions in the game but didn't hit the target."
