Atdhe Nuhiu scored Sheffield Wednesday's first goal in their last four FA Cup games to beat Luton Town and book a place in the fourth round.
The forward beat James Shea from 10 yards a minute after the interval, after strike partner Steven Fletcher brought the ball down inside the box.
Luton had their chances to draw level but Cameron Dawson produced two saves to deny Luke Berry and Dan Potts.
Wednesday will face holders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the next round.
League One high-flyers Luton - playing their first home game under caretaker manager Mick Harford following Nathan Jones' departure for Stoke - took the game to their Championship counterparts in the first half, as 20-year-old James Justin caused the visitors problems with his pace from left-back.
The Hatters had 10 corners and eight shots in the first period, but failed to make their opportunities from wide positions tell and allowed Wednesday to regroup at the break.
The visitors responded well in the second half and quickly took the lead when Nuhiu capitalised on Fletcher's control inside the Luton area to stab home the only goal of the game.
James Collins almost sent the tie into extra time late on, but his left-footed effort from close range only found the post as Wednesday held on to ensure a first meeting with Chelsea since the Owls were relegated from the Premier League in 2000.
'A proper FA Cup tie' - what they said
Luton caretaker manager Mick Harford: "The players were magnificent, against a Championship team, we went toe to toe for 90 minutes. They had a little spell in both halves where they've dominated possession a little bit, but never really hurt us.
"I think chance-wise, shots-wise we dominated them and are very, very unfortunate to not come away with some kind of result.
"I'm very proud of the players. I'll repeat it again, if we play like we did tonight and we did on Saturday, we'll be in the shake-up at the end of the season, absolutely."
Sheffield Wednesday assistant manager Steve Agnew: "Terrific, I'm really pleased with the players. It was a very tricky tie and I thought we stood up to it well.
"Luton did push us back after we got the goal, and [goalkeeper] Cameron [Dawson] made one or two really good saves and they hit the post, but so did we in the first half through Fletcher.
"From a spectator point of view it was a terrific cup tie. A proper FA Cup tie with passion, effort and determination.
"Now we have a terrific cup tie to look forward to at Chelsea. We are looking forward to that but first we have a tough home fixture with Wigan."
