Jason Kerr: St Johnstone agree two-year contract extension

Defender Jason Kerr has agreed a two-year extension to his St Johnstone contract amid reports of a unsuccessful bid from Barnsley.

The 21-year-old centre-back, a product of the Perth club's youth system, has been an ever-present in the Scottish Premiership this season.

Manager Tommy Wright brushed aside interest from the English League One club as Kerr signed on until May 2022.

"I think reports say £100,000 and that says it all," the manager said.

"I always knew he wanted to stay here and the club had no intentions of selling him."

Wright stressed that the Scotland Under-21 international had benefitted from spells on loan to East Fife then Queen of the South.

"Since he came back here and broke into the first-team, his all-round game has improved significantly," he told St Johnstone's website.

"He's improved in the air and also with the ball at his feet. His positional sense and strength has also improved over the past year. He's done incredibly well for us this season."

However, Wright thought Kerr realised that playing regularly for St Johnstone was best for his career.

"There's still aspects of his game he can work on if he wants to get to the very top and I believe he can do just that," he added.

"Jason knows that he can still improve and he sees the best way to do that as being here at the club playing regular first-team football."
