Doncaster Rovers have suspended Niall Mason a day after the defender was given a suspended prison sentence after admitting a charge of sexual assault.
A judge at Sheffield Crown Court gave the player a six-month jail term, suspended for two years.
Mason, 22, has been placed on the sex offenders' register for seven years after an attack on a woman last year.
The club is now "investigating matters in line with internal procedures and EFL contractual requirements".
In a brief statement,, external the League One club added: "Mason had insisted he was innocent of the charge since the allegation was initially made, and the club had proceeded on that basis under the principle of innocent until proven guilty."
Doncaster said that no further comments would come from the club "until the conclusion of this process".
Mason has been a regular for the promotion-chasing South Yorkshire side and started in Saturday's 2-1 FA Cup fourth round home win over Oldham, just four days before he faced court.
