Bolton Wanderers 1-2 Ipswich Town: Collin Quaner scores two in Tractor Boys' win
- Published
Collin Quaner scored two first-half goals to give bottom side Ipswich Town victory over fellow Championship strugglers Bolton Wanderers.
The home side had more of the chances at the University of Bolton Stadium but only got on the scoresheet thanks to a stoppage-time own goal by Josh Emmanuel.
The game was in doubt when Bolton were given a prohibition notice on Tuesday preventing fans from entering the ground, but was later given the go-ahead.
The defeat dents Bolton's hopes of surviving relegation, while the Tractor Boys remain bottom of the table and 13 points from safety with six games to go.
Bolton are eight points behind 21st-placed Reading and safety and facing the prospect of joining Ipswich in League One next season.
A dour first half was eventually lit up when Town struck 12 minutes before the break.
Skipper Luke Chambers crossed superbly from the right and Huddersfield loanee Quaner rose highest to head home from eight yards.
Alan Judge forced a save from Remi Matthews with a low right-footed shot as Ipswich sensed a second goal.
And there were joyous scenes among the travelling fans when Quaner was allowed the time and space to fire in a right-footed effort from 20 yards that went in off an upright.
Wanderers, who were booed off at half-time, were brighter in the second half but could not prevent the visitors from picking up a first away win of 2019.
However, Ipswich could still be relegated on Wednesday if they lose at Brentford and Reading win at Norwich.
Bolton boss Phil Parkinson told BBC Radio Manchester:
"We were off the pace first half. Nowhere near the level required to compete at this level. We looked off the pace all over the pitch.
"This is a crushing blow for us especially with all the teams winning around us.
"I think the week's preparation hasn't been good enough. When you've got a whole squad who haven't prepared as we can, I think it showed."
On when he expects the playing staff to receive their wages for March, Parkinson said: "I've just had no indication of when the wages can be paid. From everybody's point of view that's the harder thing to take really."
Ipswich Town manager Paul Lambert told BBC Radio Suffolk:
"I thought we were brilliant, I thought we were excellent.
"We played a really good game. we passed the ball really well, we moved it really well. They couldn't handle it.
"I thought we got two outstanding goals. The second half wasn't as dynamic as the first half, but it was comfortable us.
"I'm really proud of the team. We have actually played like that and not got the reward we deserved."
