From 4-1 down to Europa League semi-final - Frankfurt advance after thrilling tie
- Published
Eintracht Frankfurt overturned a 4-2 first-leg deficit to defeat Benfica on the away goals rule and set up a Europa League semi-final with Chelsea.
Goals by Filip Kostic and Sebastian Rode sent the German club, who trailed 4-1 at one stage in the first leg, through to a first European semi-final in 39 years.
Valencia meet Arsenal after an aggregate 5-1 win over Villarreal.
The semi-final first legs take place on 2 May, with the return a week later.
Frankfurt fly Germany's flag in Europe
Frankfurt are enjoying a fine season under Austrian Adi Hutter, who only took over last summer.
Fourth in the Bundesliga table, last season's German Cup winners can now look forward to a first semi-final in a European competition since beating German rivals Borussia Monchengladbach in the 1980 UEFA Cup final.
Benfica, finalists in 2013 and 2014, were largely toothless although it required a dramatic last-minute save by Kevin Trapp to deny the Portuguese leaders.
Trapp produced a fingertip stop to deflect a strike from Argentine winger Eduardo Salvio on to a post.
Valencia ease through against Villarreal
Leading 3-1 from the first leg, Valencia eased into the semi-finals after a 2-0 win over La Liga rivals Villarreal at the Mestalla.
Valencia's goals came from 21-year-old Toni Lato and former Real Madrid midfielder Dani Parejo.
Valencia will face Arsenal, managed by their former manager Unai Emery, in the last four.
The first leg will take place at Emirates Stadium.
