Cove Rangers are on the brink of promotion to the SPFL after hammering League Two Berwick Rangers in the first leg of their pyramid play-off tie.

Goals from Sam Burnett, Mitch Megginson, Jamie Masson and Jordon Brown gave the Highland League champions a comfortable victory.

The returns leg takes place at Shielfield Park on Saturday.

Cove could become only the second club to gain SPFL promotion since the pyramid structure began in 2013.

The Aberdeenshire side, who move to their new stadium this season, lost the play-off final to Cowdenbeath last season and earned their place this term by beating Lowland League champions East Kilbride in their semi-final.

Berwick, who finished bottom of League Two, have now lost eight games in a row - and their last six away from home - while Cove have won eight in succession and are unbeaten in 20 games.

The English-based side now face an uphill battle to extend their 64-year stay in the Scottish senior leagues - and the distinction of being the only non-Scottish club in the Scottish Professional Football League.
