West Bromwich Albion: Gareth Barry & James Morrison not offered new deals by Baggies

Ex-England international Gareth Barry and Scotland midfielder James Morrison are among five players not offered new deals by managerless West Bromwich Albion after missing out on promotion.

However, they have been told they could stay if the incoming head coach wants them and they have not found new clubs.

Goalkeeper Boaz Myhill, defender Tyrone Mears and midfielder Wes Hoolahan are the others not on the retained list.

But Chris Brunt, 34, has played enough times to trigger a year's extension.

Midfielder Brunt was sent off in Tuesday's play-off semi-final second leg exit at the hands of Aston Villa, the last of his 36 appearances this season.

He has now played 410 times for the Baggies, scoring 48 goals, as part of a career that began at Middlesbrough, took in 153 games for Sheffield Wednesday and also earned him 65 caps for Northern Ireland.

Having joined Albion in the same week as 32-year-old Morrison in 2007, he will now be on his own as the club's longest-serving player.

Morrison, who missed most of Albion's 2017-18 season though injury, has made 341 games for Albion, scoring 39 goals.

Former Aston Villa, Manchester City and Everton utility man Barry, 38, has been with Albion for two seasons, having won the last of his 53 England caps in 2012.

'Door not completely shut'

Albion technical director Luke Dowling confirmed that Albion's new head coach, expected to be appointed within the next fortnight, may still have some input, revealing that the club were forced to make a decision now on Barry and Morrison, to comply with FA regulations.

"The door won't be completely shut to them," Dowling told BBC WM 95.6. "I'll wait to have a conversation with whoever the new head coach will be to see if he would like them to be part of his plans next season.

"If he does then negotiations will start, if they haven't signed for another club.

"They've been great pros. But they're at an age and stage in their careers where we have to offer them contracts by the third Saturday in May.

"We have to do that with any out-of-contract player. That's the rules and regulations."

Teenage midfielder Rekeem Harper, who has made a big first-team breakthrough this season, has been offered a new deal but has yet to sign.

Fellow youngsters Dara O'Shea, Alex Palmer, Eoin Ashton, Stanley Asomugha, Zak Brown, Ted Cann, Tyrese Dyce, Pablo Martinez, Yusuff Ojebode, Tom Sharpe, Peter Taylor, Aksum White have all signed new contracts.

And seven more - Bradley House, Callum Morton, Finn Azaz, George Harmon, Jack Chambers, Nick Clayton-Phillips and Sam Wilding - have been offered deals.
