Luton Town: Martin Cranie signs & Gary Brabin returns as assistant boss

Martin Cranie began his career at Southampton and previous clubs also include Portsmouth and Middlesbrough

Championship side Luton Town have signed defender Martin Cranie following his release by Sheffield United.

The 32-year-old former Barnsley and Coventry player made 16 appearances for the Blades last season as they gained promotion to the Premier League.

Cranie has played 360 league games in his career and also helped Huddersfield reach the top flight in 2016-17.

"I've spoken to the manager a few times over the summer and I'm glad we finally got it over the line," he said.

Luton manager Graeme Jones told the club website: "He started life as a midfield player, but he's played anywhere across the back four or a back five, so he's vastly experienced and very healthy professional to sign on a free transfer."

The length of Cranie's contract at Kenilworth Road has not been disclosed.

Meanwhile, former Hatters boss Gary Brabin has returned to Kenilworth Road as one of two assistant managers.

The 48-year-old took Luton to the Conference play-off final in 2011, which they lost on penalties.

Former Tranmere boss Brabin was most recently number two to Terry McPhillips at Blackpool before leaving in March for personal reasons.

"I know him almost better than anyone as a reliable, intelligent, streetwise football man," said boss Jones.

Brabin replaces Steve Rutter, who left the Bedfordshire club on 19 June to join Greek side Atromitos.

Luton say they will announce their second assistant "in due course", with Mick Harford - who took caretaker charge after Nathan Jones' departure to Stoke in January - reverting to his previous position of chief recruitment officer.
