Stefan Payne and Darren Potter: Tranmere Rovers sign striker and midfielder
- Published
Tranmere Rovers have signed striker Stefan Payne after his contract with Bristol Rovers was cancelled by mutual consent and midfielder Darren Potter.
Payne, 27, who has signed a two-year contract, scored three goals in 27 games for Rovers.
His solitary campaign was also marked by controversy, as he was fined by the club for reportedly making a rude gesture towards their own fans.
Potter, 34, has signed a one-year deal after being released by Rotherham.
The former Liverpool trainee has made 410 league appearances in a career that has also included spells with Southampton, Wolves, Sheffield Wednesday and MK Dons.
Rovers boss Micky Mellon said Payne would fit "the old-style aggressive target man role".
"He will make a good physical contribution alongside getting us that end of the pitch and keeping us there," Mellon told the club website., external
"He will hopefully chip in with a fair amount of goals too, so I am really pleased to get someone of his experience into the group."
The addition of Payne and Potter means Rovers have now signed seven players this summer following promotion to League One via the play-offs last season.
