St Mirren midfielder Kyle Magennis will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, says manager Jim Goodwin.

The stand-in captain was taken off on a stretcher seven minutes into Wednesday's 1-0 loss against Rangers.

And a scan has confirmed Scotland under-21 international Magennis has a cruciate ligament injury.

"I am obviously disappointed because I lose a good player from the team but I am more disappointed for him," Goodwin said.

"I have been there myself as a player and it is the worst thing that can happen. It is important that we as a club support him as best we can.

"He has been captain in a number of games this season in Stephen McGinn's absence and I think that gives you the idea of the character of the boy that I am willing to make him captain at such a young age."

St Mirren sit 10th in the Scottish Premiership, and host Aberdeen on Sunday in Paisley.
