Vakoun Issouf Bayo has made 14 appearances since joining Celtic last January

St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin believes his club have signed a "proven goal scorer" in Seifedin Chabbi.

Chabbi's arrival on loan from Turkish Super Lig side Gaziantep FK was announced on Saturday, having completed the deal late on Friday.

The 26-year-old forward has been capped at Under-21 level by Tunisia and has played for St Gallen and Sturm Graz.

"He scored 22 goals in 35 games in Austria so his stats are good - he's a proven goalscorer," said Goodwin.

"He's been over in the Turkish Premier League. The good thing for us is that we had a link to him because his representative looks after [St Mirren winger] Ilkay Durmus."

Watford's Alex Jakubiak, 23, has also joined the Paisley club on loan until the end of the season.

Goodwin did confirm his side had made an enquiry for Vakoun Bayo, but that Celtic manager Neil Lennon wanted to keep him.

"Bayo would be a fantastic signing for us," he told BBC Radio Scotland. "But Neil Lennon wants to run with four strikers and Bayo is part of his plans and that's where that one ends."

Fellow forward Jakubiak spent the first half of this season on loan at Gillingham, where he played with fellow new recruit Lee Hodson., external

St Mirren are the league's lowest scorers and Goodwin believes that Jakubiak, who had a spell at Falkirk in 2018, could be the man to address their impotence.

"Most importantly, he's got an eye for goal," he said. "He's a player that can link the game up, he's got really good pace, he can get in behind.

"He did well when he was at Falkirk but we believe that with the experience he's had down in England since then that he'll be coming up to Scotland as an ever better player than he was then."

Hodson also chose a loan return to Paisley over rival options in the Scottish Premiership and English League One.

The Northern Ireland defender had moved to Gillingham last summer after spending last season on loan in Paisley from Rangers.

Hodson's arrival came with fellow defender Paul McGinn completing a switch to Hibernian. Meanwhile, 18-year-old full-back Ethan Erhahon, who has not played since July, has joined Barnsley on loan.
