Wigan Athletic's off-field problems did not improve on the pitch as they lost their opening League One game to Ipswich at Portman Road.

The Latics, relegated from the Championship after a 12-point deduction, were caught out by a quick free-kick headed home by Teddy Bishop.

Substitute Gwion Edwards sealed the points for the home side with a smart turn and shot with 10 minutes left.

Emeka Obi twice went close with headers and Joe Garner hit the bar for Wigan.

Wigan were allowed to start the season under administration following their relegation and appointed John Sheridan as manager on Friday.

But they had to put out a makeshift side at Ipswich after 14 players left the club, including Kieffer Moore to Cardiff and Antonee Robinson to Fulham, both for £2m.

The Latics still created plenty of first-half chances, with Obi missing the target from six yards and Garner's overhead kick coming back off the crossbar.

The game turned in Ipswich's favour when Freddie Sears was put away down the left wing and his bouncing cross was headed in by Bishop for his second professional goal.

Bishop almost added a second when his shot from outside the box hit the base of the post.

James Wilson dragged an effort wide for the home side but Edwards ended Wigan's hopes from another cross pulled back from the byeline.
