Jordan Clark's first goal for Luton was enough to see off Reading and set up a Carabao Cup third-round tie with Manchester United.

Clark scored an excellent towering header from Rhys Norrington-Davies' free-kick on his first start for the club.

Luton had the majority of chances, Danny Hylton going close with several headers.

Reading had to wait 71 minutes for a shot on target through Sam Baldock.

Both sides were much changed from their opening wins in the Championship on Saturday, with Reading giving game-time to nine academy graduates.

Luton have now won all three of their games this season, having also beaten Norwich in the Carabao Cup first round.

Their tie at home to Manchester United will be played next week with the exact date yet to be confirmed.

Luton boss Nathan Jones: "It was another good game. We made a lot of changes because some of them need the minutes. We feel we have a strong enough squad to be able to do that and show the competition the respect it deserves.

"I'm delighted with another win, another clean sheet. I would have liked to score more because I thought we had enough opportunities to put it to bed a little bit earlier but it was a good run-out.

"We're very pleased with the goal and the work rate, no injuries, 90 minutes, so they are all better for the experience."

Reading boss Veljko Paunovic: "We lost the match but we won a lot of positives that we can take into the future.

"We always go out to win. And we were close. We weren't intimidated by our opponent at any moment.

"But nobody likes to lose. This is football and we also have to learn from our defeats."
