Carabao Cup: Morecambe 1-0 Oldham Athletic - Wildig goal sees Shrimpers through
- Published
Morecambe will host Premier League side Newcastle in the Carabao Cup third round after knocking out fellow League Two club Oldham Athletic.
Aaron Wildig had an early penalty appeal waved away before chipping in the opener from Liam McAlinden's pass.
The hosts almost doubled their lead when Ryan Cooney's 30-yard strike crashed against the crossbar.
Oldham rallied towards the end in vain, Adam Phillips almost scoring an own goal and Carl Piergianni heading wide.
Morecambe manager Derek Adams:
"It shows what good quality we have in the squad.
"I thought we started the game very well - passed it, moved it and created openings.
"When you have your midfielders scoring goals, which we do, it's hugely beneficial."
