Jadon Sancho is Manchester United's top summer transfer target

Manchester United have made progress in their efforts to sign England forward Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

United have broken an impasse by agreeing a deal over wages and agents' fee around any move that could materialise for their main target.

But there is still no guarantee of an agreement between the clubs before transfer deadline day on 5 October.

Sources close to German side Dortmund are adamant they will not alter their demand for a fee in excess of £100m.

It had been suggested they needed to sell the 20-year-old, and would soften their approach as deadline day neared.

And United have indicated they would pursue alternative targets if Dortmund do not reduce their demands.

Last week, the Premier League club signed Netherlands midfielder Donny van de Beek from Ajax for £35m.

Meanwhile, sources have told BBC Sport that the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic at Old Trafford will become apparent when the club release their 2019-20 financial statement later this month.

It covers a period including the first three months of the coronavirus lockdown.

Smalling's United future in doubt

Chris Smalling trained on his own on Thursday morning, casting doubt on his United future.

The former England international spent last season on loan with Serie A side Roma. He made a positive impression and it was thought he might return for a second spell.

However, it is not certain Roma have the finance to conclude a deal and United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had indicated Smalling could remain at Old Trafford.

Smalling's contract runs to 2022, with the option of an additional season.
