Barnsley have signed Liverpool midfielder Herbie Kane for £1.25m on a four-year contract.
The Premier League champions will retain a 15% sell-on clause for the 21-year-old, whose only first-team games were in last season's Carabao Cup.
Leicester City midfielder Matty James, 29, has also rejoined the Tykes for a second loan spell until January.
Meanwhile, striker Cauley Woodrow has extended his deal with the club until the end of the 2022-23 season.
Woodrow, 25, has scored 31 goals in 74 league appearances since initially joining on loan from Fulham in August 2018.
He had been linked with a possible move to Championship rivals Cardiff City.
"I know there's been a lot of speculation recently about my future, but as soon as I heard that Barnsley were offering me a new contract it was something I was keen on doing," he told the club website., external
Tykes "thrilled" to add Kane
BBC Sport understands Luton Town, Hull City and Portsmouth were also keen on signing Kane.
He spent the second half of last season on loan at Hull, having been at Doncaster Rovers for all of 2018-19.
"He has had an excellent education with Liverpool, working under one of the finest managers in world football, and has shown that he has the quality to compete at this level," Barnsley chief executive Dane Murphy told the club website.
"I want to score goals and hopefully I can do that here, look back and reflect on it at the end of the season," said Kane.
"It's a part of my game, trying to score goals from midfield as well as getting assists and helping the team - as much as I can do that, the better."
James made 18 appearances for Barnsley during the 2016-17 season, scoring once, before returning to Leicester.
He has struggled with injuries since then and has only made two senior appearances for the Premier League club in the past two seasons, the most recent against Manchester City in February.
