Claudia Walker hits winner as Birmingham beat Aston Villa

Claudia Walker scored the only goal as Birmingham City won at Aston Villa in the clubs' first Women's Super League meeting.

Blues edged a disappointing derby when Walker fired in off the underside of the bar on 72 minutes, after Lucy Whipp's cross had created the opening.

Stine Larsen went closest for Villa, heading wide just before the break.

But it was a happy end to the week for Blues, who had been hit by injuries and Covid-19 protocol and restrictions.

On Thursday, boss Carla Ward said they had only 10 fit players available and they ended up only naming two substitutes at Villa Park.

It was the first game between the sides in the WSL following Villa's promotion to England's top flight last season.
