Nottingham Forest had 70% first-half possession but were unable to score

Bristol City ended a run of seven straight home defeats in the Championship as they held Nottingham Forest to a draw at Ashton Gate.

Robins' Henri Lansbury and Forest's Alex Mighten hit the post in the first half in a game of few clear chances.

The visitors controlled possession for long periods without finding the net.

Both teams observed two minutes of silence before kick-off in memory of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who died on Friday.

Forest looked the more confident of the two sides in the opening stages.

Anthony Knockaert's shot from the edge of the area flew wide, before his free-kick resulted in a tame Joe Worrall header.

Teenage winger Mighten's strike then hit the post, before Kasey Palmer had the Robins' first shot just after the half-hour mark.

The home side grew in confidence when they too hit the post through Lansbury's curling free-kick.

In a second half of few opportunities, Forest substitutes Luke Freeman and Lyle Taylor both fired over the bar.

The hosts held on for a point that keeps them 14th in the table, one place above their opponents.

Bristol City manager Nigel Pearson told BBC Radio Bristol:

"For us to be pretty satisfied with a 0-0 draw gives you an indication of just how difficult it's been for us.

"The players certainly wanted to have a spirited performance and I think we got a very committed performance.

"There is still lots of work to do so I'm not suggesting that it's the polished performance we aspire to get but it's a move in the right direction."

Nottingham Forest manager Chris Hughton:

"I'm probably more disappointed than pleased. In regards to control of the game, I thought it was one of our good performances.

"We just need to get the goal to make the difference and give ourselves that little bit more in the final third.

"Credit to Bristol City, they have gone through a difficult period and they have had a lot of injuries. That is difficult to deal with and we hoped to capitalise on that."
