Navigating St Johnstone through their Covid-19 troubles "has probably been the toughest time of my career" says boss Callum Davidson.

St Johnstone have been without several players in the last week, and only named five of seven substitutes for their midweek defeat at Celtic.

After the game, the club confirmed they were dealing with "an ongoing situation with Covid-19".

Their latest round of tests have all come back negative.

"It is really tough," Davidson said. "I am probably one of these people who would like to make sure I deal with it myself and make sure everybody else is focussed and in a positive frame of mind.

"I did say to my wife: 'Surely I should be enjoying this time of the season?' We have got huge games coming up and basically I have got thumping headaches thinking about things."

Some players are set to return for their final Scottish Premiership game of the campaign, at home to Livingston on Saturday.

Prior to last weekend's Scottish Cup semi-final win over St Mirren, St Johnstone announced two players had tested positive for Covid-19 and two others had been advised to isolate despite testing negative.

Five first-team regulars were missing from the squad at Hampden, with four more absent at Celtic Park.

The League Cup winners face Hibernian in the Scottish Cup final on 22 May.

"It has probably been the toughest time of my career," Davidson added.

"As a player it is easy because all you did was think about yourself, as a manager, you have got to think about others, it is more the health side that I am more concerned about than anything else."

Meanwhile, St Johnstone have announced striker Chris Kane has signed a new two-year contract.
