Dundee United have sold striker Lawrence Shankland to Belgian club Beerschot for an undisclosed fee.

The 26-year-old Scotland international had a year of his Tannadice contract to run, having scored 40 goals in 74 games.

He has signed a three-year deal with the Antwerp-based club.

And Beerschot technical manager Sander Van Praet described the new arrival as a "real goal thief" who has "room for growth".

Shankland told the United website, external: "I came to United with the objective of developing personally and helping the club get back to the Premiership and I now see it is the right time to take the next step in my career.

"I leave knowing there is an excellent squad and great coaches at United and I am excited to see how successful this season will be for them. I now look forward to my future in Belgium and cannot wait to get started."

Following two prolific seasons at Ayr United in the Championship, Shankland fired in 28 goals as Dundee United sealed their return to the top flight in 2019-20.

His tally reduced to nine as the Tayside club ended up the Premiership's lowest scorers last term, while he has three League Cup goals to his name this season.

Beerschot finished ninth in the Belgian First Division A in 2020-21 and are currently bottom of the table with one point from their first three matches.
