Wigan Athletic beat Bolton Wanderers 5-4 on penalties in a highly charged local derby to reach the Carabao Cup third round.

There were few chances in a scrappy and feisty first half which saw the hosts shown four yellow cards.

Tendayi Darikwa fired goalbound after the break as Wigan pressed for the opener but Bolton cleared their lines.

Latics goalkeeper James Jones fired in the hosts' last penalty while Nathan Delfouneso missed the decisive kick.

There was a raucous atmosphere at the DW Stadium for the tie, with 4,662 Bolton fans making the short trip past the M61.

It was the hosts who went through, however, and for the second time on penalties this season after they beat Hull City by spot-kicks in the first round.

Wigan Athletic boss Leam Richardson told BBC Radio Manchester:

"It's important that we're aware of where we were not so long ago. It's important we work hard to get some depth out of the window.

"The lads who took to the field tonight have worked really hard this week to do what we want and I though the subs also maintained the standards and took it up as well.

"Jamie Jones joins in the penalty-taking at the end of training so I had full confidence in him."

Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt told BBC Radio Manchester:

"It was tight, there weren't many chances at either end. I thought we probably had the better [of the chances].

"We gave it our best shot. We didn't lose the game. We competed well. We're disappointed. We were on the right side of a shoot-out at Barnsley and the wrong side here.

"They're not meaning to miss them [penalties] but there's nothing for them to feel sorry for themselves about, we're a club on our way back."
