Ten-man Sheffield Wednesday held on to draw with Portsmouth and extend their unbeaten run to 11 League One games.

After a closely fought first half the hosts, who are now unbeaten in eight league games themselves, had a great chance to take the lead when Ronan Curtis saw his close range header brilliantly saved by Owls goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

Wednesday were reduced to 10 men when Massimo Luongo was sent off for a desperate lunging tackle on Curtis.

Pompey felt they should have had a penalty when George Hirst went down under a challenge from the impressive Peacock-Farrell but the referee was unmoved and, despite plenty of possession, the home side could not create any more clear chances.

The game had been in some doubt because of heavy rainfall but passed an 18:30 GMT pitch inspection.

It was the hosts, who had been knocked out of the FA Cup by League Two Harrogate at the weekend, who carved out the game's first clear chance when Marcus Harness slipped in a well measured pass for Hirst to run on to but his strike was straight at Peacock-Farrell.

That brought the visitors to life and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru came close to giving them the lead moments later when he drove forward from the centre circle and saw a well-struck shot deflect just over the crossbar.

The Owls came even closer to taking a lead into the break when Barry Bannan's free-kick was flicked goalwards by Lee Gregory but struck team-mate Liam Palmer and went over the top.

Peacock-Farrell denied Hirst again before the interval before producing excellent saves to deny Reeco Hackett's deflected shot from distance and then Curtis' header from close range in spectacular fashion.

The visitors had to play the final 22 minutes a man light after Luongo was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle on Curtis after Portsmouth had pressed him into conceding possession in his own half.

Hirst went to ground as Peacock-Farrell charged off his line but replays showed the Northern Ireland international did not make any contact with the striker.

Pompey threw men forward in search of a late winner but Wednesday stood firm to take a point that leaves the two sides in ninth and eighth respectively.
