In-form Plymouth Argyle registered their sixth successive win as they beat Cheltenham Town 2-0 to consolidate fourth place in League One.

Niall Ennis struck early for the play-off hopefuls as his powerful low effort went in off the inside of the far post, having skilfully cut in from the left.

Danny Mayor spectacularly doubled the lead shortly before half-time as he lifted the ball over Owen Evans with the outside of his right foot from the edge of the area.

Alfie May had an 83rd-minute goal for Cheltenham ruled out for offside as the visitors lost for the first time in three games.

Argyle have now won nine of their 11 league games since the start of February and are two points behind third-placed Milton Keynes Dons and seven clear of Sunderland who occupy the final play-off spot.

Cheltenham started well with top scorer May looking bright as he forced an early save from Michael Cooper.

But Ennis - who earned a recall to the starting line-up after scoring in Saturday's 4-0 win over Accrington - struck for a second successive game before forcing an excellent save from Owen Evans five minutes later with a header from a corner.

Ryan Hardie saw an effort deflected just wide of the Cheltenham post before Cooper made a fine double save from Matty Blair five minutes from the break.

But Mayor's moment of class soon after saw Argyle double the lead just before the break while Hardie hit the side netting seconds after the restart.

Hardie, Joe Edwards and Ennis all went close for Argyle as the second half wore on while May and Charlie Raglan had efforts for the visitors.

But Cheltenham could not find a way through as Argyle kept a sixth successive clean sheet.
