Morecambe did not have a shot on target in normal time but defended bravely to eventually go through

Shane McLoughlin scored the winning penalty as League One Morecambe knocked Stoke City of the Championship out of the Carabao Cup at the first-round stage.

Despite totally dominating and playing against 10 men for the last 30 minutes, Stoke could not find a way through and the game went straight to penalties after ending goalless.

Morgan Fox blazed Stoke's first effort from the spot over the bar for the only miss of the shootout, with Morecambe finding the net with all five attempts.

Stoke made eight changes from Saturday's 2-0 win against Blackpool and controlled the tie, but looked most threatening from set-pieces, of which they had plenty.

They also benefited from an extra man as Jensen Weir's foul on Jacob Brown, just outside the penalty area, earned him a second yellow card in the 62nd minute.

Dwight Gayle did find the net for the visitors but was flagged offside, and Harry Clarke saw two late efforts blocked.

Eight minutes of stoppage time were added and Stoke threw men forward to try to find a winner, but their failure to score in normal time saw them suffer in the lottery of penalties.

Morecambe manager Derek Adams told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"It was a really great night. We handled Stoke really well and caused them trouble.

"Over the night I didn't think Stoke threatened us much apart from a little when we were down to 10.

"Stoke didn't have player booked in a game where there were a lot of fouls and I find that hard to believe."

Stoke manager Michael O'Neill told BBC Radio Stoke:

"I was pleased with the performance. We made a lot of changes but we had control of the game.

"Second half we just couldn't find the goal but the goal we did score was a good goal - it's onside.

"Some of the tackling was disgraceful. We're disappointed to go out of the competition but we're pleased to get out without a player being seriously injured."
