Everton claimed a narrow win at League One Fleetwood to move into the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Demarai Gray scored the decisive goal for the visitors, sweeping home from Alex Iwobi's incisive pass.

Gray had not even been set to start the game but came in as a late replacement for Tom Davies, who pulled out after the warm-up.

The next round of the competition is scheduled to take place between 8-9 November.

While Everton manager Frank Lampard made six changes from the side that played in their 1-1 Premier League draw against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, there was still plenty of top-flight experience in his side.

The likes of Seamus Coleman, Iwobi, Michael Keane and Salomon Rondon were all included alongside £33m summer signing Amadou Onana, making his first start for the club, while Chelsea target Anthony Gordon was named as a substitute.

And while Republic of Ireland youth international Cian Hayes forced visiting goalkeeper Asmir Begovic into a good save, Lampard's side more than merited their win.
