Premier League side Bournemouth beat Norwich 5-3 on penalties at Carrow Road to reach the Carabao Cup third round.
Todd Cantwell fired what proved to be the decisive spot-kick against the bar.
Adam Idah thought he had got the winner for Norwich with seven minutes left, only for Cherries debutant Brooklyn Genesini to level in stoppage time.
Jordan Hugill earlier opened the scoring for the Championship outfit, but Bournemouth responded before the break through Emiliano Marcondes.
The Cherries made nine changes following their 3-0 defeat by Arsenal at the weekend, and then had to replace forward Jamal Lowe after he felt ill in the warm-up.
In came 20-year-old striker Christian Saydee, and it was his solo dribble and shot that allowed Marcondes to tap in an equaliser on the rebound.
Saydee almost made it two for Scott Parker's side after half-time with a neat spin and strike on goal, but his effort was well kept out by Angus Gunn, who also saved smartly from Ryan Christie and Jaidon Anthony.
Norwich then looked to have grabbed a decisive late goal when substitutes Teemu Pukki and Idah combined well, with the 21-year-old tapping in Pukki's low ball from close range past Brazil keeper Neto.
But Bournemouth continued to pour forward in search of an equaliser, and were rewarded when 20-year-old Genesini, having only come on a minute earlier, scored in the 92nd minute from fellow debutant substitute Dominic Sadi's assist to send the tie to penalties.
Norwich midfielder Cantwell - who spent the second half of last season on loan at Bournemouth, who did not take up their option to sign him permanently - was the only player to miss, taking the second spot-kick for the hosts and hitting the crossbar.
The visitors scored all five of their penalties as Marcondes, Lewis Cook, Anthony, Saydee and Christie sent them into round three.
