Josh Sargent celebrates after scoring Norwich's third goal against Bristol City

Norwich held on to beat Bristol City and move to within a point of Championship leaders Sheffield United.

Teemu Pukki scored a first-half double for the Canaries before Tommy Conway pulled a goal back for the visitors just before half-time.

Josh Sargent restored Norwich's two-goal lead after 65 minutes but substitute Antoine Semenyo added a second for the visitors with 13 minutes left, soon after coming off the bench.

Norwich have now won six league games in a row, their last defeat coming away to Hull on 13 August.

The Robins drop to seventh place, six points off the top.

Pukki opened the scoring in the 11th minute when he latched onto a mistake by Kai Naismith before lobbing Daniel Bentley.

The Finland striker added a second 13 minutes later when he raced onto a through ball from Kenny McLean and planted the ball into the bottom corner.

Bristol City halved the deficit a minute before the break through Conway's header from a Nakhi Wells cross.

Sargent scored his sixth of the season to make it 3-1 as he headed home from Gabriel Sara's corner.

But Semenyo made it a nervy finale with a fine finish from inside the penalty area.

Norwich manager Dean Smith told BBC Radio Norfolk:

"We've just won six on the spin and we're disappointed but I thought it was a good game of football if I'm honest.

"I don't think any defences were on top and it was a game littered with unforced errors from both teams.

"The first 20 minutes was the only comfortable part of the game, after that we were a victim of being over-reliant on the scoreline.

"I think Bristol City are probably the bravest team that have come here."

Bristol City manager Nigel Pearson told BBC Radio Bristol:

"I'm disappointed for the players in particular. We learnt some hard lessons tonight.

"They had chances late on when we were really going for it but we presented them with two starts which they finished with aplomb.

"When you look at the entirety of the game we've played some good positive football and I'm sure they were relived when the final whistle went.

"I think we should have got something out of the game tonight."
