Sunderland striker Ross Stewart could be out for up to 12 weeks with a thigh injury.
BBC Radio Newcastle reports the Scotland international, who suffered the injury in the warm up before Monday's 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough, could be out until after the World Cup.
Black Cats boss Tony Mowbray said Stewart will miss "six to eight weeks", adding "it could be a little longer".
The 26-year-old has scored five goals in seven matches this season.
"He's a really positive guy and we hope that he will be a quick healer, so we will take it game by game and hopefully he returns quickly," Mowbray told the club website.
"It is a blow and now we have to find a way to score the goals, but we will be positive and we will not be all doom and gloom about how we are going to win games and score."
Meanwhile, full-back Dennis Cirkin's hamstring strain is not as bad as first feared, with the 20-year-old due to return within a fortnight.
