NI League Cup: Dundela shock Premiership side Crusaders 2-1 in first-round tie
- Published
Championship team Dundela produced an upset in the first round of the League Cup by defeating top-flight Crusaders 2-1 at Wilgar Park.
Benny Igehion gave the Dundela a first-half lead and Eamon Fyfe added a second before Jarlath O'Rourke pulled one back with five minutes left.
Holders Cliftonville beat H&W Welders 3-0 and Glentoran were Tuesday's top scorers with a 7-0 rout of Institute.
Linfield ran out comfortable 5-1 winners at Moyola Park.
Igehion fired a low effort under Jonny Tuffey to put the Duns in front before then Fyfe drilled a powerful effort into the far corner after 83 minutes.
O'Rourke's consolation strike for Stephen Baxter's side came after a goalmouth scramble.
Ronan Hale lobbed the ball over on-loan Welders keeper Sam Johnston to put Cliftonville ahead in the first half at Blanchflower Park.
Hale turned provider for the second goal with 15 minutes left when he set up a simple finish for Joe Gormley and the Reds' record goalscorer doubled his tally late on when he latched onto a Kris Lowe pass to lift the ball over Johnston.
Glentoran, who last lifted this trophy in 2010, held a commanding 3-0 advantage over Institute at the break with Jay Donnelly, Aidan Wilson and Conor McMenamin on target.
A double from Hrvoje Plum either side of a Danny Purkis goal sealed the win before Ally Roy completed the scoring in the final 10 minutes.
Niall Quinn gave Premiership champions Linfield the lead at Mill Meadow with a crisp backpost volley from a Kirk Millar cross.
The Premier Intermediate League side responded almost immediately when Jake McNeill was on hand to force the ball home from close range after Blues keeper David Walsh kept out an initial effort.
However, Millar bravely restored Linfield's lead when he beat keeper Andrew Findlay to a loose ball close to the interval.
A third goal early in the second half put the game beyond Moyola as Andrew Clarke converted from close range after the hosts failed to clear a Quinn free-kick and Linfield scored two further goals in the closing stages through Eetu Vertainen and Robbie McDaid.
Last season's beaten finalists Coleraine proved too strong for Dergview with Evan McLaughlin opening their account with a header from a Dean Jarvis cross.
Michael McCrudden nodded home from Jack O'Mahony's delivery for number two and Matthew Shevlin made it 3-0 after the break before McLaughlin completed his double.
Glenavon twice hit two goals inside two-minute spells as they cantered to a 6-0 victory over neighbours Dollingstown on a record-breaking night for the Lurgan club.
A quickfire double strike midway through the first half from Josh Doyle and Conor Scannell put the Lurgan Blues in a commanding position.
Scannell made it 3-0 before Micheal Glynn notched a fourth for Glenavon before the interval.
Substitute Aaron Prendegast netted with a quarter of an hour left for Glenavon, for whom 13-year-old Christopher Atherton became the youngest player to play in a senior match in the UK when he came off the bench late on.
And the schoolboy made an instant impact, setting up Matthew Snoddy for the Lurgan side's final goal of the evening.
Premiership sides progress
Teenager Matthew Lusty struck a hat-trick as Larne overwhelmed Lisburn Distillery 5-1 at Inver Park.
Lusty opened the scoring but their Premier Intermediate League opponents hit back almost immediately thanks to a long-range strike from Matthew Swann.
Lusty restored Larne's lead on 27 minutes when he capitalised on a poor clearance from Whites keeper Ethan Carry before Sean Brown extended their advantage.
An own goal from Whites substitute Stephen Curley in the second half made it 4-1 before 19-year-old Lusty completed his hat-trick from a Dylan Sloan cut-back.
Loughgall proved too strong for fellow Championship side Knockbreda, winning 5-0 at Lakeview Park.
Nedas Maciulaitis fired Loughgall in front from the edge of the penalty area before Benji Magee dispossessed an opponent and raced clear to score.
Former Coleraine striker Maciulaitis notched his second goal before Mark Patton added a fourth and Ryan Masterson added the fifth with a goal on his debut.
Carrick Rangers ran out convincing 5-0 victors over Banbridge Town thanks to goals from Andy Mitchell (2), Curtis Allen, Aodhan Gillen, who bagged his first for the club, and Emmett McGuckin.
A Luke Walsh first-half header saw Warrenpoint Town past fellow Championship outfit Newington 1-0 while Annagh United eased to a 4-0 away win over Bangor.
Summer signing Walsh scored the only goal after 32 minutes as Barry Gray's side booked place in the next round.
Dungannon Swifts had to wait until the second half of their tie with Queen's University to break the deadlock - James Convie hitting a quickfire double before Brendan Barr added the third.
Oisin Conaty's treble helped Portadown to a 5-0 victory over Armagh City. The 19-year-old opened the scoring on 14 minutes before two second-half strikes.
Jordan Jenkins made it four from the penalty spot and Armagh were reduced to ten men - Scott McCann was shown a straight red for a foul on Billy Stedman - before Zach Cowan hit number five.
There was drama at Dixon Park as Ballyclare Comrades overturned a 2-0 deficit to defeat Ballinamallard United 4-2.
Ten-man Newry City, who had Philip Donnelly sent off in extra-time, beat third-tier Limavady United 5-4 in a penalty shootout after the sides played out a goalless draw.
