Hull City ended a run of five consecutive Championship defeats as they came from behind to beat Wigan Athletic at the MKM Stadium.

The visitors took the lead early on following a short corner as Will Keane headed in at the near post within a quarter of an hour.

Hull struck back and were level just seven minutes later when Dimitris Pelkas scored his first goal for the club.

The hosts led after the break when Oscar Estupinan headed in at the near post from a corner and they held out to seal a vital three points.

Victory for Hull moves them up to 17th in the table, however Wigan's second defeat in five means they drop to 12th place.

There had been concern for the hosts after Wigan took the lead in style with a well-worked team goal as Keane found the net from a fine Thelo Aasgaard cross from the right.

But that lead did not last long as Pelkas got on to the end of a sensational Lewie Coyle cross from long range, which he turned in from inside the box.

The hosts have been without a manager since Shota Arveladze's exit on Friday, however Pedro Martins was sat next to Hull owner Acun Ilicali in the stands amid speculation he would be appointed as the Georgian's replacement.

Hull went into the lead with 25 minutes remaining when Estupinan found the net with a well-placed header following a corner to the hosts and they never looked back.

Hull City interim boss Andy Dawson:

"He [Martins] will have seen a hard-working team that try to play in a certain way and want to give everything for the shirt.

"This result was not about me. It was about the club, the players and fans as we needed some points.

"I'm so, so pleased for the players. They deserved that result and stuck to the process. If you keep doing the right things, you'll get the rewards."

[On whether he will be in charge against Huddersfield on Sunday] "I've no idea. I'll speak to Tan (Kesler, Hull vice-chairman) after the game and we'll see what happens from there."

Wigan Athletic manager Leam Richardson:

"It's always hard, with emotions straight after a game, but I thought a draw would have been a fair result.

"We started both halves well, but I was disappointed with the two goals. It's obviously not a result that we wanted, but we're still on this journey from administration to League One to the Championship.

"I thought we started the second half really well, but it was really disappointing to concede with a set-piece for their second goal.

"We're under no illusions. We know exactly what we are and we move on."
